Protect the Clinic Door: Sign Our Petition to Keep ICE Out of Healthcare Spaces
Hospitals should be places of healing, not fear. Yet right now, many immigrants in our community are afraid to seek medical care because ICE and CBP agents have detained people at hospitals and outside emergency rooms.
MELT is calling on hospitals to take a Sanctuary Hospital Pledge:
- No arrests or detentions without a valid, judge-signed warrant
- No patient information shared with immigration authorities without a court order
- Clear, public policies and staff training to protect vulnerable patients
Why this matters:
Undocumented people across the DC metro region and beyond avoid hospitals out of fear. Patients who come for help may instead be targeted and taken to detention centers, often without legal counsel or due process. Some are deported quickly. Others are held in unsafe conditions where medical care is denied and lives are at risk.
This is not only a legal issue. It is also a medical and moral one. Doctors take an oath to do no harm, and hospitals must uphold that commitment by protecting patients inside their doors.
That is why MELT has launched a petition on Change.org urging hospital administrators to adopt and publicize a Sanctuary Hospital Pledge. We’re calling on hospitals to take actions to train staff and publicize their policies so that everyone can feel safe enough to get the healthcare they need.

Together, we can ensure that hospitals remain places of safety, care, and dignity for everyone.

Who we are:
We are mothers and community members from all walks of life with one thing in common: we are witnessing immigration policies and actions that go against what we believe is right, both as Americans and as mothers.
We’ve watched violent events unfold that violate our values and, all too often, the Constitution itself. We’ve felt helpless as families are torn apart and due process is ignored. We have decided not to sit idly by. Now, we are coming together as a calm, clear, and unified voice to speak out and call for change.
